Hanging Clam Shell-Garden for Fall

2 min read

A hanging clam shell garden is a beautiful way to mark the end of summer and welcome autumn. These arrangements use natural clam shells as planters or decorative elements, often filled with seasonal plants, succulents, or small dried flowers.

Why It Works for Labor Day

Clam shells are naturally light, airy, and have a timeless seaside look that can be paired with late-summer or early-fall blooms. They're perfect for outdoor spaces like patios, balconies, or garden corners, and can be arranged to catch the breeze, adding movement and texture to your space.

How to Create Your Garden- An Easy and Quick Project

When choosing your shells-select clean, dry clam shells. If you are going to hang the garden, you will want to drill a hole in the area of the shell you will be inserting the rope or hanger. If you want them to stand upright, prop them up with driftwood, small rocks or stands that you can purchase on sites such as Temu, Amazon, etc.

Prepare the planting medium - use floral foam cut to fit inside the shell. Soak in water if you are going to use live plants, or leave dry for artificial plants. Insert and secure the foam with glue allowing it to dry before adding plants.

Select fall-friendly plants. Options include: succulents for low-maintenance greenery, miniature ornamental grasses for movement, autumn flowers like pansies, snapdragons or marigolds or herbs such as oregano or sage for fragrance and color.

Arrange and hang once you have placed your plants in the order you want them. Add small shells, silk fall leaves, pinecones or decorative pumpkins and floral peat moss to complete your design. Use twine, hemp, string, a macrame hanger or wire frame for hanging. If you use a stand your arrangement works well as an end table or coffee table display piece or on the patio, as a stunning garden art piece. Pair with other shell garden decor such as seashell wind chimes or shell stepping stones for a cohesive look.

Tips for Longevity

Keep shells clean and dry between uses to prevent mold. In colder climates, move or cover hanging gardens during frost in the event you use live plants. Rotate plants seasonally to keep the display fresh.

A hanging clam shell garden is both a functional plant display and a statement piece of garden art, making it an ideal Labor Day decoration that transitions beautifully into fall.
